"A Savior, Who Is Christ The Lord" By Roger A. Scully, Jr.
No one can argue that our society has come to be one of selfish ambitions and desires. Everyone seems to want everything their way and on their own time, and few seem to have real concern for others. The attitude prevails which says, “No one can tell me what to do,” and “I won’t follow anyone’s rules.” You would think this attitude would be less prevalent among proclaimed religious people, but the fact is that this attitude is mostly seen among those professing a relationship with Jesus. You see: people like the idea of a “Savior,” but balk at the idea of a “Lord.” However, the Bible teaches us that Jesus the Christ is both Savior and Lord; hence you cannot have Him as the one without having Him as the other. In Luke 2:11 the shepherds were told by the angel of the Lord, “For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” The term Savior is translated from the Greek word soter, which means: one who saves, or one who delivers. This is applied to Jesus because He came to save, that is to deliver, men from their sins and the bond of death (1 Cor 15:26). This was accomplished in His death and resurrection, and the giving of His word, which gives men life (Matt 4:4). I am thankful for Jesus as my Savior. However, He is also described as my “Lord.” The term Lord is from the Greek word kurios, which means: he to whom a person belongs, the one has the right to command and demand. Jesus as my Savior constitutes a recognition of Him as my Lord, which means He owns me and has the right to dictate my actions. In Romans 6: 16-17 the Holy Spirit put it this way: “Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one's slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered.” Note the word that is used four (4) times in these two verses: OBEY. Because Jesus is not only a Savior, but also a Lord, the concept of obedience is an actual part of the salvation He offers. Again the Spirit says, “He became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey Him” (Heb 5:9, ESV). For this cause Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commandments” (Jn 14:15), and again, “You are my friends if you do whatever I command you” (Jn 15:14). While it remains that people want a Savior without having a Lord, Jesus can only be accepted if He is accepted as both. Do you want Him as your Savior? Are you willing to accept Him as your Lord?
